You cannot cultivate what you’re not aware of. Awareness is your tool to broaden the list of things you can change. We live in a quantum universe, and thanks to Einstein for helping us understand that our reality is entirely based on the experience of the observer. Drop your red pills because we’re going even deeper into the rabbit hole this week. Our reality is affected simply by the act of observing it.
Changing the state of something through observation is actually a well documented phenomenon in science known as the Observer Effect. In short: the term refers to changes that the act of observation will make on a phenomenon being observed. This is often the result of instruments that, by necessity, alter the state of what they measure in some manner.
Our measuring instruments are our senses which are processed through our nervous system. If we direct our instruments (our senses) inward and begin measuring our internal functions such as thoughts, emotions, spatial positioning, joint articulation, muscle tension, breathing patterns, etc… our awareness becomes the deciding factor in the sensitivity of our instruments. The more intricately we are aware of ourselves, the more intricately we can affect change. This is known as self observation.
Self observation in movement (the use of internal awareness kinesthetically) can be used to record all the aforementioned internal functions, and more, all at once during a workout. We can use our awareness to see ourselves accurately during moments of high fatigue that occur during a high intensity workout. This is how we can use awareness to make ourselves better. Why the hell not!? You cannot cultivate what you’re not aware of! You’ll never affect change in the things you cannot see.
Therefore Quantum Coaching is the act of observing yourself during a movement, openly, honestly and free from judgement, in order to get a clear picture of yourself. Once this clear picture develops, change will naturally follow, sometimes without any effort or conscious decision. Thanks to the Einsteinian Universe we live in; it just happens. The sticking points you will experience in form, fitness and growth are because you’re against a wall you can’t hurdle, because you’re unaware of how to get over it…
...or that there is even a wall there in the first place!
This is also true of success in every single human situation in life; ever.
A good coach, in my opinion, will be able to help lead you to awareness of greater things. Their job is help you understand that you’re stuck against a wall, that the wall isn’t insurmountable, and to give you the first step in hurdling it. That’s what we do; and that’s how I geek out every single day! Our job is to see you clearly and to help make you better. Therefore, measure the quality of your coach in their ability to be aware of things you are clearly not! Or better yet, their ability to make YOU understand how to be aware of things you're clearly not.
Give-a-man-a-fish vs. Teach-a-man-to-fish; we all know who wins.
Round 1: FIGHT!
K.O.!
For example, let’s take every movement manual for a martial skill, sport, or fitness training ever made in human history. The writer isn’t a master of anything! They’re simply sharing with you the fruits of their awareness. They didn’t possess anything special! They just harnessed awareness and gradually discovered something wonderful within themselves.
“Good coaches are cheat codes for the video game of fitness.” - Some tall nerd!
You have that same power and ability, and it’s time to wake up and start using it! During your workout, bring your awareness to your thoughts, feeling, breathing, body position, joint articulation, muscle tension, expression, mental state, mind frames, energy levels, nutrition, natural reactions, allergies, fears, life choices, daily decisions, spiritual paradigms, and interpersonal interactions JUST TO NAME A FEW THINGS!
Use awareness to observe yourself, free from judgement, and begin changing things just by the act of seeing them clearly. Achieve your fitness goals! Become a Quantum Coach!
A little awareness goes a long way.
Your Homework:
Continue to:
1. Play; both inside the gym and outside.
2. Learn new skills or continue to master known ones (or both!)
3. Grow tall at least once a day for 5 consecutive minutes.
4. Perform core workouts daily.
5. Get breath!
6. Wake up!
7. Perform the 10 minute Squat test regularly!
8. Visit stillness in movements to master them.
9. Master the three basic functional movements!
